Plagiocephaly
The postural plagiocephaly ( positional or deformation ) is an asymmetric malformation of the skull caused by a constant pressure in this same region . In the past 10 years, the number of cases of postural plagiocephaly has increased in the population of children under 1 year at more than 10 times ( 1/300 newborns to 1/ 30 cases) .
In Catalonia the number of cases in relation to the birth rate and the quality of care currently could be quantified in more than 2000 cases per year . In Spain a total of 8000 new cases occur annually. The significant and progressive increase of patients with this problem has led to a greater involvement of the public administration , concerned with coordinating cases of plagiocephaly .
In a large majority of patients, treatment of postural plagiocephaly only involves giving accurate information to families about the problem ( It is not a disease ) and implement methods of postural Prophylaxis ( Tummy Time) or explain the rehabilitation treatment , which is especially effective for children 6/7 months.
However, in cases in which the deformity is severe , or that by the deadline , do not respond to prophylactic and persist significant degree of deformity ( Moderate or Severe) , shall be indicated to apply a cranial orthotic treatment , always evaluating each case individually .
In Institut Sant Joan we follow a rigorous anthropometric assessment in order to make an early detection.
The parameters to estimate are the child's age and anthropometric degree of deformity : Mild, Moderate or Severe , as measured by the various publications accepted .
The usefulness of Cranial Orthoses , is sufficiently proved with no doubt in the patients in whom the indication is clear, after assessing the parameters established , the non-application , can sometimes involve anatomical and functional changes in the craniofacial area , specially in ophthalmological, dental and neuropsychological level .
Institut Sant Joan , after a rigorous anthropometric assessment of deformity, makes the production of Cranial Orthoses or " corrector helmet " that perfom a gentle but steady pressure on the affected areas to achieve the natural growth of the baby's head , inhibiting the after growth in the prominent areas and allowing the development of the flat regions .
Adjustments are made frequently , as baby's head is growing and rigorous monitoring of its entire evolution takes place. Our team of professional physiotherapists and orthopedic technicians , provides a rigorous and individualized follow-up.
